Huntington Dog Beach Survival Guide - A List of Items to Bring with You

The following is a basic list of items that I have found make Dog Beach even more enjoyable as if that was even possible.

Dog Beach, it’s the most popular place to go on a hot day in sunny southern California with a dog.

Dog Beach at Huntington Beach is a wildly popular place to hang out with your fur babies on a hot summer day. Dog Beach spans 1.5 miles across just from Goldenwest and Seapoint Street off PCH. Parking is $2.00 per hour and there are pay boxes at different point of the parking lot. Patience is required here, there is usually a line of cars out to the street.

I have two boys, a 4-year-old terrier mix and one year old cattle dog/papillon mix. They love the water, fetching their toys and swimming. If you are travelling through town with your dog, make time to stop here. If you visit during the week, it is less busy, but you will likely see other dogs around.

You don’t have to own a dog to go here, but remember, most dogs don’t have boundaries. They are super friendly and want to make friends with everyone and everything they see. The vibe here is so chill and relaxed.

When making plans, I recommend you eat before you go, don’t bring it with you! I’ve seen some dogs raid people’s blankets and bags while the humans were in the water. It really happens.

Don’t forget to bring water and a bowl. There is no water from the parking lot to the water.

Below is a short list of items I like to bring with to make us all a little more comfortable. I do most of my shopping on Amazon so I am referring you the items I purchase and recommend. I scour the reviews and product specifications to death before I purchase pretty much everything.

1. Sunshade – whether you bring an umbrella or one of those tiny half dome cabana’s during prime sun time, it’s always nice to hide from the beaming sun. It tends to get blown out in the afternoon. My cabana has seen its last summer, I think it’s time for a new one. Mine is large enough for two beach chairs with plenty of room around us.

 2. Cooler – nobody likes warm water on a hot day. Bring a small to medium cooler and pack plenty of water for your furry friend and maybe some fruit for you. i always like a product that packs down after use. After a full day of fun in the sun, the less weight you carry back the better!

 3. Chairs or blanket – warning, if bringing a blanket, it will get dirty. I always bring an outdoor blanket and it always gets dirty.  Plan B, I have two low beach chairs that we take with us. It’s better for my back and less of a mess.

 4. Water & pet bowl – as mentioned above, if your dog plays with any type of ball, it will get sandy. Wet sand sticks to everything. Bring water to rinse of the toys and water to drink. Again, sand gets everywhere, including the water bowl.

 5. Towel – Obvious. Which dog doesn’t like a nice toweling. I bring one for me and one for my dog.

6. Wagon – this is the bonus item.

If you don’t; have the chairs that strap to your back and all your pet’s beach toys don’t fit in the beach bag, you need a wagon. Luckily, the distance from the sand to the water isn’t as long as that at Huntington Beach State Park. The bigger the wheels the easier to navigate through the sand.

To sum it up, dog beach is fun, being prepared makes it more fun. If you have any other ideas for items you can’t live without, please let me know! I would love to do an updated post including any great ideas or items.

Hello, this is my first post. I beg your mercy. I want to say a quick hello.

I am an Orange County native, specifically I live in Santa Ana, California. I am married with a stepson and two dogs. No children of my own.

My stepson is grown and currently working out of Kuwait as a government contractor. More of that later.

I have a four-year-old terrier mix, Cody and a 1-year-old cattle dog/papillon mix. He looks like a miniature red heeler.

We (my husband and I) spend most of our time hanging around town, usually anywhere we can take our dogs with us. We have never left them anywhere overnight. I think we are more attached to them than they to us. We work from home so it's easy to form attachments with them.

We travel often, mostly in our travel trailer. It's our goal to camp as often as possible. Due to the current gas prices, we travel close. Living in Orange County means we travel to Riverside mostly, and the Sierras as much as possible. I could live camping, so my husband just has to say when and I'm ready.

I love baking & decorating sugar cookies and pizza-shaped cakes. I just got a new mold, and I look for any excuse to use it. Heck, I'll bake anything.

Lastly, for now, I enjoy other DIY projects such as making epoxy tumblers. I see something pretty and I think, "hey, I can make that too!" but that's still a work in progress. The garage is pretty messy right now and I can't access my workstation, but once i can believe, I will be posting about them.

The plan is to post about my local and long-distance adventures relating to dogs, camping, baking/cooking and dog friendly activities on more than a local scale.

Please stay posted and I promise to try and not bore you too much. If you have any suggestions of places to go and recipes to try, I'm more than happy to them. I don't have any food restrictions. I'm on the See Food Diet.

Hope to see you next post!
